| Image below: Shameen is somewhat difficult to describe so I have included
the shot below (which was not part of the records of ) to give some idea
of how it was connected to Canton. It was obviously a manmade island, and
must have been part of Canton but for the moat dug arround it that split
it off from tthe land on teh side of the Pearl River. Shameen was the Anglo-French
concession in Canton and was about a 5 by 2 city blocks in size. There were
at least two bridges spanning the moat to the mainland and for reasons
I haven't discovered, there were no roads on the island. There were just
paved and grass walkways between the buildings and no vehicles, cars or
even rickshaws, were permitted. |
