PHOTOGRAPH GALLERY ELEVEN
|

|
The photographs appearing in this gallery come from the records of Chief
Petty Officer Hugh D. Whiting as he served aboard HMS Falcon and HMS Bee
from 1931 to 1933. The order in which the photographs appear in each section
of the gallery is almost identical to that of the album in which the photographs
were found and notations made by P.O. Whiting are included above each photograph.
His service record indicates that he was on both HMS Falcon and HMS Bee
so the photographs seen are probably derived from his service upon both
of these ships.
Hugh Whiting (widely known as "Tom") was born in 1896 in Islington,
London and joined the navy at age 15. At the outset of WWI he was assigned
to the Royal Naval Division and was interned in Holland following the withdrawal
from Antwerp (for more information click here). Among other ships, P.O. Whiting served aboard HMS Royal Oak 1919-20,
HMS Bluebell 1921-24 (Far East), HMS Royal Sovereign 1925-27 (Mediterranean)
and was posted 1931-33 to China, on HMS Bee and HMS Falcon. In WWII he
was a survivor from the Jervis Bay, sunk by the Admiral Scheer, Nov. 5th
1940, in protection of of Convoy HX 84 (for more information click here). He finally retired from Service in 1945.
I am immensely grateful to Dr. Donald Whiting for permitting his Father's photographs to be posted on the site. Requests to use these photographs are welcome, but publication (by any means) may only occur with prior approval of the Whiting family. Any inquires regarding these photographs should be made to Donald Whiting, care of the site webmaster.
All of the images below appear in both high resolution and low resolution
formats. Viewers of the site who connect to the internet via a telephone
modem should probably view the images in low resolution so that download
times do not become prohibitive.
