PHOTOGRAPH GALLERY FIVE

HMS Kinsha

(In Memory of John Curnow)

The photographs appearing in this gallery come from the records of John Curnow who served on HMS Kinsha as she patrolled the Yangtze river from 1903 to 1905. HMS Kinsha had been privately constructed for upper Yangtze service by an ex-missionary, Archibald Little. Given her ability to traverse the upper Yangtse, the British government commandeered her during the Boxer Rebellion to evacuate British citizens from Chungking. Originally built as the "Pioneer", the Royal Navy purchased the vessel in 1900, renaming her HMS Kinsha. She was a paddle steamer and much larger than the Royal Navy gunboats then on the Yangtze, HMS Woodcock and HMS Woodlark. She had significantly better crew quarters than either of these vessels and was therefore adopted as the Royal Navy Yangtze flagship.

The photographs below are quite unique and the only I have seen of the Kinsha or the Yangtze during this period. The upper Yangtze had been successfully traversed by steam ships just three years before these photographs were taken. Prior to that, the Chinese had simply hauled ships upriver using large numbers of men and ropes. A significant number of the photographs seen below document this event, an undertaking that had occurred for hundreds, if not thousands, of years. As it is difficult to group these photographs into categories, I have left the majority of them in the order in which they appear in the photograph album in which they were found.

I am immensely grateful to the Angove family for permitting these photographs to be posted on the site. Requests to use these photographs are welcome, but publication (by any means) may only occur with prior approval of the Angove family. Any inquires regarding these photographs should be directed to David Angove.

All of the images below appear in both high resolution and low resolution formats. Viewers of the site who connect to the internet via a telephone modem should probably view the images in low resolution so that download times do not become prohibitive. I have included some very high resolution crew images so that crew members can be more easily identified (these are very large files).
