PHOTOGRAPH GALLERY SIX

Arthur Whelan

The photographs appearing in this gallery were taken by Signalman Arthur Whelan who served on HMS Robin as she patrolled the West River in 1920. Of the early Royal Navy river gunboats, HMS Robin was probably the best known by the local population and this may explain why, out of her class of four ships, she continued in service all the way to 1929 (she was built in 1897). It should be noted that Arthur Whelan's service also included HMS Tamar (Royal Navy base at Hong Kong) and HMS Hood.

I am immensely grateful to the Whelan family for permitting these photographs to be posted on the site. Requests to use these photographs are welcome, but publication (by any means) may only occur with prior approval of the Whelan family. Any inquires regarding these photographs should be made to Steve Whelan.

All of the images below appear in both high resolution and low resolution formats. Viewers of the site who connect to the internet via a telephone modem should probably view the images in low resolution so that download times do not become prohibitive.
