The photographs appearing in this gallery were taken by Chief Petty Officer
Ronald Lydon who served on HMS Falcon from 1937 to 1939. Ronald Lydon served
on the Yangtze during an interesting period as the Japanese were well into
their attempted conquest of China and the Yangtze had been cut off due
to hostilities between the opposing forces. HMS Falcon was at Chungking
(which remained in Chinese hands) and, as his rotation had come to an end,
Lydon was faced with the daunting prospect of leaving China. Chungking
was some 1,300 miles up the Yangtze and the only way out was a southwest
overland route via the Burma Road into French Indo-China (modern-day Vietnam)
and out to the coast beyond Hanoi. Several pages of the following photographs
document this journey and I cannot thank the Lydon family enough for permitting
them to be shown on this site.
Requests to use these photographs are welcome, but publication (by any means) may only occur with prior approval of the Lydon family. Any inquires regarding these photographs should be made to Jon Lydon, care of the site webmaster.
All of the images below appear in both high resolution and low resolution
formats. Viewers of the site who connect to the internet via a telephone
modem should probably view the images in low resolution so that download
times do not become prohibitive.
