Given the enormous flotilla of ships in the distance I would guess this
is Nanking or Wuhan (Hankow). The larger ship to the left has to be HIJMS
Ataka (Japanese).

"Us landing for the football match at Changsha. That's me with the
Yankee sailor's cap on." - If you look at this shot closely you'll
notice it is very odd. The Falcon's crew appear to be dressed in costumes
ranging from the Grim Reaper to Cleopatra. My Grandfather appears as a
US sailor half way through the group.
To get to Changsha, the Falcon had to leave the Yangtze (either at Wuhan
or Sashi) and steam south through Tung Ting Lake. Changsha is located at
the lake's southern end, on the Yuan River. The estimated sailing distance
from Shanghai would be about 1,000 miles.
HMS Sandpiper was specifically built to navigate these waters and spent
almost her entire service at Changsha. I suspect that the match mentioned
in the photograph's caption would have been played against the Sandpiper's
crew .
