"A ship ahead of us (the Falcon) in the Gorges." - The Gorges exist between Ichang and Chungking, which are both located on the Upper Yangtze. Ichang is approximately 1,000 miles up river from Shanghai and Chungking is another 500 miles further on.

"The same ship behind us in the Gorges."

"The Hsin Tan rapid 30 miles above Ichang." - This rapid involved two perilous 90 degree turns.

This is a shot of the same location seen above, taken from higher up on a hill and at a lower river level. (I found this shot in, "Yangtze Patrol, the U.S. Navy in China", by Kemp Tolley, and it was probably taken in the later 1930's. The notation on this shot states that the Hsin Tan is, "the meanest of all rapids".)

"The Hsin Tan. This is a rotten rapid to get over in the winter."

"Entrance to Wuchan Gorge. Height of the cliffs is about 2000 ft." - At this point, I have not properly located the Wuchan Gorge, but it is definitely north of Ichang.

"End of one of the Gorges." - Location is somewhere between Ichang and Chungking.

"Sunset in the Gorges".
