Below: Map of China from the 1930's.
A significant problem in conducting any research regarding China is place names. There are multiple phonetic spellings of place names (additional multiples for each European language) and those names have changed over time. Modern maps with English place names are virtually useless when reviewing pre-WWII documents. Below are some maps from the 1930's and on the map immediately below I have highlighted (in red) names of locations commonly found in European documents from the period. Most of the highlighted locations are major cities, foreign concessions or locations in which foreign navies tended to congregate.
